The Living lattice Labyrinth is the result of the unique planting and growing method and consists of over 9,000 trees (not hedges) covering over 2,000m2 (½ acre) with over 2 kilometres of paths. The maze is over 4 metres tall.
The unique method of growing is the result of inosculating the trunks of the trees which have been stripped of foliage while leaving a top of leaves above head height which is trimmed like a traditional hedge.
There are several reasons and benefits of this technique (more information in the FAQ section)
- Parents don’t lose their children so easily (and small children can get through the wall to their parents)
- The openness allows the breeze to keep it cool
- The openness allows claustrophobics to keep their cool
- People can communicate with each other in the maze
- It allows some planning of where to go
- It’s beautiful and magical
- Having the trunks of the trees bare means we have to do less pruning
If we get behind with the pruning it doesn’t really matter as most is above head height
Maze Games
- Can you find the dragon, the elephants or the fairies?
- Look out for the crocodile, the gnomes and the penguin!
- Even Ned Kelly and Buddha are there to meet you.
