March 1998
The cuttings were potted from their seed-trays into 140mm (5.5”) pots.   Due to some losses through lack of striking, being eaten by hares etc. the count was now down to 8,232 plants.   However, this was not a problem as it was anticipated that 6,500–7,000 plants would be needed for the maze.

Unsuccessful bid at auction for suitable land. This was very frustrating as a lot of work had gone into research about the suitability of the location.

November 1998
The property here at Alstonville was purchased. Started planning the Development Application for council to get permission for the venture.  A planning consultant was used and this managed to eat up over 12 months of time and $10,000 of valuable capital.

November 1998/ January 1999

The plants were transported plants from Brisbane to Alstonville.   This was a trip of over 3 hous - about 200 kilometres.   We were now down to 7,500 and lost about 200 during the trip when the 3-tier shelving in one of the trucks collapsed.

January – April 2000
The 'babies' (now 'adolescents') were transplanted from the 140mm pots into 200mm (8”) diameter planter bags and planting partially in the ground (500 were transplanted into 250mm pots for future sale as standards – trade enquiries welcome).
The planting in the ground was particularly difficult as over 1300mm (5.5”) of rain fell in one day during the planting. Luckily, this amount of rain is unusual.

2001
Excavator in to create the maze pad

April 2001
Development Application approved by Council
Retaining wall constructed
Sub-surface irrigation installed
Started planting the maze

May 2001
So far 3000 trees have been planted and that makes it half-way complete. We have stopped planting over winter as the cooler weather is not conducive to transplanting.
